Description of Research
We are Shannon McPheeters and Sarah Stiles, fifth grade teachers at Star International Academy. We are collaborating with Stein Brunvand, an Educational Professor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. We are very excited about the project and we hope that your child will be able to participate in this learning opportunity.

Your child will have the opportunity to use Google Earth and complete several online tours of the founding of the colonies. They will be using the computers in the SIA library and will be guided by both Mrs. McPheeters and Ms. Stiles. Students will be learning geographical, historical, and social facts concerning the three colonial regions of the United States. They will be taught using primarily textbook and secondary reading resources for two of the colonial regions and for the third region they will use Google Earth to access online tours, text, still pictures, and video.

Procedure
We will give the students a survey to determine their knowledge of the founding of the European, Middle, and Southern colonies. The survey will also include questions that determine the attitudes of the students towards social studies instruction. The students will be taught the geographical, historical, and social aspects of each of the three regions of the 13 original American colonies. For two of the regions students will be taught using textbook, secondary text, and primary test resources. For the third colonial region students will be taught the same aspects only using Google Earth. After the completion of each region students will be creating a panel of a poster that will show what they have learned for each of the regions. When the paper assessment has been completed students will be given a follow up survey to reassess their attitudes towards social studies instruction.

Risks of Participation
There is no risk for the student who participates in this instruction.

Participants
The participants for this study will be in Mrs. McPheeters and Ms. Stiles’ fifth grade class. They will participate in the instruction during our regularly scheduled social studies time.

Benefits of Participation
Students will benefit from this study by gaining knowledge of new technology. They will also be learning in an interactive environment designed to enhance learning and motivation.

Confidentiality
Students will remain anonymous throughout the study. They will not be identified in any reports regarding this study.
